What is Paracord 550?
Paracord 550 is a lightweight, high-strength nylon rope. Its name directly reveals its core characteristics:
"550": This represents the rope's minimum breaking strength of 550 pounds (approximately 250 kg). This means it can withstand at least 550 pounds of static tensile force under laboratory conditions.
"Paracord": Originally designed for use as suspension lines for parachutes. During World War II, it was widely used by US paratroopers, who discovered numerous other applications on the battlefield, leading to its widespread popularity.
Core Structure: The key to Paracord 550's strength and versatility lies in its unique internal structure. It consists of two layers:
Outer Sheath: Constructed of 32 (or more) tightly woven nylon strands, making it highly abrasion-resistant.
Inner Core: Inside the outer sheath are 7 or 8 individual nylon core strands. These core strands can be pulled out and used individually.
This "sheath-core" structure allows 550 paracord to withstand immense tensile strength while remaining highly flexible and easy to weave.

Main Uses of 550 Paracord
The uses of 550 paracord are almost entirely limited by the user's imagination, but can be summarized into the following main areas:
1. Military and Outdoor Survival (Core Use)
This is where paracord first shone, earning the nickname "the Swiss Army knife for survivors."
Building Shelter: Used to tie sticks and secure tarpaulins.
Making Traps: Utilizing the fine inner core to create survival traps.
Equipment Repair: Repairing damaged backpack straps, shoelaces, tent poles, etc.
Medical First Aid: Can be used as a tourniquet in emergencies (correct usage required) or to make splints.
Water Access: Woven into a net to filter large particles in water.
2. Everyday Use and EDC (Everyday Carry)
Survival Bracelets: This is the most popular use. Braid several meters of paracord into stylish bracelets or watch straps for easy carrying and quick disassembly when needed.
Keychains: Braid into compact keychains that are both beautiful and practical.
Dog Leashes/Pet Collars: Strong and durable, an excellent material for pet supplies.
Binding Straps: Used for temporarily binding luggage, securing items in vehicles, etc.
Shoelaces: Many times stronger than ordinary shoelaces.
3. DIY Crafts and Decorations
Paracord comes in various colors and even special patterns like glow-in-the-dark and camouflage, making it a treasure trove of materials for craft enthusiasts.
Bragging Various Items: Can be braided into belts, gun slings, phone straps, cup sleeves, etc.
Decoration: Used to decorate knife handles, toolbox handles, camping gear, etc., adding aesthetics and providing anti-slip properties and extra rope.
4. Disassembly and Use
For finer tasks, you can disassemble the paracord and utilize its inner and outer parts:
Outer Sheath: Can be used as finer binding thread or sewing thread.
Inner core: 7-8 independent nylon lines can be used for:
Fishing line (in survival situations).
Mending clothing or equipment.
Making dental floss (in emergencies).
Setting up delicate trigger mechanisms.
